Sunrail Phase 2 Southern Expansion (4 Stations & Vehicle Service Facility)

Project Details:

This project involved the design and construction of the track, communications system, civil, structural, and roadway work for a fully functional commuter rail system, extending from the Sand Lake Road Station in Orange County to the Poinciana station in Osceola County. This portion of the work consisted of the design and construction of a Vehicle Storage & Light Maintenance Facility (VSLMF) near the Poinciana Station in Osceola County. The work included four (4) commuter rail stations with parking and bus circulation for Meadow Woods, Tupperware, Kissimmee, and Poinciana stations. DBK served as the dedicated subcontractor responsible for the construction of the four (4) stations and the VSLMF construction.

Collaboration and Value Engineering: DBK actively participated in VSLMF design meetings to optimize cost-effectiveness while meeting project requirements. This included the adoption of energy-efficient LED high mast lights, reducing costs and maintenance. Adherence to Buy America requirements was ensured through meticulous vetting of materials and equipment.

Construction Challenges: Constructing the station platforms near the active AMTRAK station at Kissimmee and adjacent to live tracks with CSX, AMTRAK, and SunRail Passenger Trains posed unique challenges. Meticulous planning and engineering solutions, such as installing sheet piles to retain tracks and serve as formwork for platforms, were implemented to accommodate live train traffic during construction. Changes in top-of-track elevations required close collaboration to ensure ADA compliance and minimize schedule impacts.
