CSX Queensgate Locomotive Shop Expansion

Project Details:

Expanding the Queensgate Locomotive Shop in Cincinnati utilized the design-build delivery method, enabling rapid completion. This project involved enlarging an existing 25,000 SF shop by an additional 25,000 SF, complete with the installation of a drop table, a wheel truing machine, and multiple cranes. Overcoming intricate site logistics and phasing challenges was paramount, as seamless execution was essential to avoid disrupting the daily operations of locomotive repair and servicing in the existing shop.

The construction team’s insights into logistics and phasing were invaluable, directly influencing the final design of the expanded facility to meet project objectives. This meticulous planning aimed to minimize interruptions while accommodating construction activities. Temporary track work was integrated into the site design to facilitate construction, with final track adjustments made to accommodate the expanded area of the renovated shop.

A significant hurdle involved coordinating clearances from the centerline of new tracks and existing tracks inside and outside the building. Procurement of the pre-engineered building began well ahead of the final design phase to expedite the schedule. This proactive approach ensured timely project delivery.
